WANTED - Dead MRS-8 - Received!

Post by Jim_Fogle » Sun Jul 13, 2014 1:47 pm

I have a MRS-8 that I use a lot. I'd like to obtain a non-working MRS-8 for spare parts, practice assembly & disassembly and to photograph inside and out. If yours powers-up but doesn't function correctly, is missing parts like a fader cap, jog wheel or cover for batteries or SD card compartment I don't care.

I am happy to pay packing & shipping cost.

are you checking ebay occasionally?
Functioning MRS8's are going for $100 now, so you might be able to find a cheap 'parts' unit once in awhile.

Hi Lucas,

Yes, I have a search routine that alerts me about every MRS-8 offered on eBay by US sellers. Some of them are real dogs missing parts or with a cracked display but still selling for more than I can afford to pay; especially with some of the shipping charges some people want to collect.

Another site I check on every now and then is Amazon.com. Lots of Goodwill collection sites list items like books and oddball items on there. I recently purchased a Haynes manual for my daughter's car for $3.00 including shipping. Conversely my daughter purchased me a genuine Peavy gigbag (for my Peavy Predator strat clone) for about $5.00 a few months ago.

As is true for almost everyone nowdays, every penny has it's purpose.

I have a MRS 8 but it's still in good working condition. I use to really like it but since I can no longer find a card manager for it it's pretty much useless to me now.

Forum Member codekiddie wrote a ZOOM file converter for Windows that can be used for the MRS-8 instead of the AFM or card manager.
You can download the program here:

Wow!!! Thanks a lot. I haven't been able to do much with it since my old pc died a few years ago. I thought I might really have to buckle down and learn how to use cubase or some such daw.

Jim,

are you checking eBay?
$80 or best offer - try offering him $40 or $50.
Bid currently at $12.50

Hi Lucas,

Thanks for sharing the link and for helping me to search.

I'm presently watching that one and another one posted yesterday that ends in five days. If past sales are any indication, both will end up selling for $80 to $100. Every now and then one will sell for $40 to $50 but it doesn't happen often. I also search through Amazon once or twice a month.

I keep hoping to find one marked for parts but in the last year or two those listings have become very rare. There use to be some pawn shops that would list items they didn't test or the only thing they did know is the devices would power up but I haven't seen any listings like that for awhile.

A local Goodwill store had a MRS-8 and a HD-16! They wanted $150 for the MRS-8 and $300 for the HD-16.

Evidently Zoom products don't break and have really good resale value!

Good / Bad news!

A forum member had a MRS-8 that quit on him. :(
The forum member replaced the MRS-8 with a R8
The forum member shipped the non-functional MRS-8 to me :gosh:
I have a MRS-8 to disassemble and use as a photo model :cheer:

great news! (for you, anyway) ;)
will you post photos of the disassembly and notes on how to take it apart without breaking anything?

Hi Lucas,

You've pretty much outlined my plan; I just haven't implemented the plan.

So far I haven't found a way to take everything apart in a non-destructive manner. I'd like to be able to disassemble down to the bare case with all circuit boards separate but I'm not there yet. I've tried a few different approaches but I've hit roadblocks each time. I'm sure that once I determine the correct disassembly order it will be a "duh, why didn't I see that before" moment but it hasn't happened yet.

Thanks for your continued interest in the project as well as your support while I was in the hunt for a carcass.

looking forward to it.
I sold my 1608CD as soon as I started recording with a PC, but I still have my first MRS-8 that I purchased new.
It's been packed away for 6-7 years now, but I haven't wanted to part with it since it's still a good little travel multi-track.
I actually recorded more on it than the 1608CD, so that may be part of the stronger 'bond' I have with it.
Curious to see what it looks like inside.
I bought a second, used MRS-8s at one point and thought about tearing it apart just to see, but I decided to give it to a nephew instead.
