Worrying about it is bad. Forcing you to come up with good lyrics is good.

(Johnny Cash is in my head now... "I used to wear a rainbow every day...but now I'm dressed in black")

I was destined for the Apple by the sea
But my roots got hold of me
I couldn't pry loose of my history holding me
Now I'm dressed in black like my dad before me.

No ladies would want me
I'm too far gone down the shaft
It's been a year since I think that I've laughed.

It's a serious time and a serious place
when the soot's in your soul, heart and face
It's there to the bone and I'm not coming back
Now I'm Dressed in Black

I've never worked in the coal mines, but the "vibe" I've always got was that it is mostly looked upon as a good job in the Appalachians, mosty because one just starting out in their working life can make $40,000-plus a year without having to go to college. The guy that did the movie "SuperSize Me" worked in an underground mine (in West Virginia) for a month for his show "30 Days" and a lot of the people (and their views on life) in that episode were really familiar to what I see in Southwest Virginia.

I think a male coal miner would be looked upon by a lot of women in the Appalachians as someone with a good job that would make a good provider. The dark side is that people do die in accidents in the mines (probably around a dozen a year in each of the big coal-mining states), and some people are maimed for life (I know of several myself). I think one miner in the "30 days" episode was making around $100,000 a year, he discovered that his lungs were really damaged ("black lung") but he didn't want to consider (in middle-age) another type of work where he might only make minimum wage, I can see how one might be mentally trapped in the job.

I do like your words about being trapped in the life your are born into, but I would not deny the miner love.

Well I came here today to try and pull some of this together but

(a) too many ideas
(b) I hate to leave someone out
(c) I'm not sure I can do it justice with all the good ideas

Instead of trying to use all the ideas just pick out the best bits and then rap a thank you song with all the screen names of all your contributors . Then use it to open your show with. If nothing else it should get few laughs on the pronunciations.

Ok I'll get back to the tablets.

sorry I forgot to post this addition to mine:

__________________________________

Father to son
Father to son
we pass the hat
we pass the gun
deep black boots that kick in trails
of blood & death & coffin nails

& when it's time to face someone
we might sweat
but never run
hold the weapon calm & still
aim it true
aim to kill
knowing this will be our fate
to fall to earth & lie in state

I tried to keep this life from you
the stories I told
though all were true
were meant to warn
to keep you safe
not glorify the battle rage

so when I see you dressed in black
I wonder if you're coming back
from the destiny you call your own
from the streets you travel all alone
will I be seeing you again
or will I be rememberin'
the time I saw you cold as stone
black pants
black shirt
black hat
black gun
all dressed in black
and death had come.

So Lucas, you wrote a great set of lyrics, ignoring everyone's input :)

nope, not true :D

yours & Kerry Penley's idea of westerns, cowboys & bad guys got me thinking about gunfighters.
I liked Kerry Penley's lines:
"What did you expect of me
in the second act
to make my exit/entrance
dressed in black
"
I think I could work that into what I wrote without much alteration.

While davecooper's theme didn't catch fire with me, his match of 'not coming back' with 'dressed in black' is likely the germ for first lines I wrote.

I also thought Criddle's miner idea was a pretty cool take. :)
I guess the gunfighters could come from a coal mining family..?

I thought we were just throwing out ideas, did I miss something?

I really liked your lyrics too Lucas - I dont think its possible to grind up 10 lyrics into 1 - you just have to go with what works (even if my own lyric doesnt feature!!)

Thanks!
I liked some of your images.

I did this with yours just now, it's a bit darker:
--------------------------------------------
Snow falling through stark leafless trees
that grow on the edge of deep black hole
that echoes with the screams of a wild burning love
a love that was taken by heart tearing second
when the agent of change came like a foe
wearing the night like favorite cloak

dressed in black
like a man who was asking to murder
dressed in black
like a man who would smile and go further
dressed in black
not a man, but a reaper had come
and stolen from me what I'd built my world on
----------------------------------------------

EDIT: added the last line on 10/05/2009

I did this just now also, using ideas from some of the other posts.
I tried to work it into the one above, but it doesn't really fit.
I was trying to tie the whole 'miner' theme in.

-----------------------------------------
every time you sparked, you shone so bright
the world in your soul, in your heart, in your face
I'm warm to bone from your burning light
so far from this time and this serious place

When I open my eyes the truth comes like a slap
the angel is dark, top to bottom, front to back
it lays in the earth and pretends to be trapped
but sneaks it's way out in my hair, in my clothes, in my lungs, in my pack
it denies me a life I can never get back
------------------------------------------
now and forever I'll be dressed in black

I wonder what the replies would have been like if you'd put up "dressed in any colour, other than black"

Anyway a few thoughts.

Oh no - not that black dress again.

The colourless hours dressed in the darkeness are never as black as the depths of her soul.

The black that dresses the mind of her lover is only a glimpse of the darkness within.

Hey, I don't know if this project is still going, but I'm interested in seeing a song from it. I found it interesting tossing a song idea around. If none of my thoughts are in the song, I"m fine with that...I just thought it could be a song like the song "Highwayman" (by, I think, the Hightwaymen)...In that song there are 4 different seemingly unrelated characters (supposedly the song is about reincarnation)...In a "Dressed in Black" song there could be many characters (the beatiful woman, the coal miner, the govenment agent) whose only relationship to one another is in the color in which they dress.
