* Frank Canonica - Water For Tears
Great as always. Poppy and cool in a better than the Beatles kind of way.

* The Continentals - Working Man's Blues
Acoustic instruments sound good on this. Nice atmosphere and nice job.

* Laurier Tiernan - Ransacked
Wow, crazy cool song. I didn't expect it to suddenly rock out.
:stick: :beavis:

Dave says it's African mixed with punk, which is right, but misses the obvious name: Afro-Punk!

* Sean Fellowes - World Peace
Another amazing song. Very ambitious. Fantastic mix and musicianship.

Another great show, gents.

Writing music and lyrics-…hmm….interesting take on all of that. I had to think about how I approach writing and, I don’t know, it all just happens. Some songs are just noodleing and singing. I just know for myself few songs are written lyrically and then music gets put to them. It all happens at once with the microphones blazing and then I go back and tweak the real rough stuff. Probably why a lot of my songs have weird lyrics.

Rewriting- I t would be a rare day to go back and rewrite. Interest gone. Re-sing maybe
I’m usually sick of the damn song a day later.

Classical musicians- No comment. I got the essence of Dave’s comments.

Working mans blues- Weird sounding. At times it felt Latin jazzy. I really liked the vocal on it. It’s neat to see what folks from three different continents meld into music.

Ransacked- Absolutely a blast! I love this song. The guitars are great. The energy is palpable. The lyrics that I could hear are great. If I have any criticism it would be that I could not hear the vocals well in spots.

10 mistakes- All rubbish to me. Yes some of the points are valid, but I’m not sure that a song sounding amateurish and garage band fab is wrong. Cheap reverb, too much reverb, to much bass….all okay with me. I know my stuff sounds all produced up but that’s me .I really enjoy hearing other peoples songs the way they like them. With the exception of the above mentioned “hearing the lyrics” in ransacked. I do want to hear them well.

Dave recording his band rehearsal- It just reminded me of years ago Grandma Melonhead and I would put a cheap cassette recorder on the floor somewhere and hit record. Later we’d try to record the song properly to a multitrack cassette recorder and it would sound okay but the little, cheap, cassette just stuck in some corner usually sounded better. Probably not because of sound quality but we were just playing and not having to think about anything technical.

Whirled Peas- Very nice indeed. Very well produced and yet natural sounding. The choruses are quite nice. Real drums ! yeah! Lots guitar indulgence which is not my thing but it really worked great on this song. At points it feels prog rock to me, like Yes perhaps. Very good singing!!!!

P.S. check out the “Primrose league” on youtube. Very nice stuff. Very XTC

That’s my two cents…………………..

Thanks for this show!

Frank Canonica - Water For Tears
Wonderful! Great vocals. I love the drums.

The Continentals - Working Man's Blues
As expected with Mr Lyzenga & Co., it's well performed and produced. Hard to believe they're not in the same room playing. Strange kind of blues, in a good way.

Laurier Tiernan - Ransacked
Not my style of music but it has lots of energy and that's good.

Sean Fellowes - World Peace
Wow! First, I love the bass sound. The chorus comes with a great sound change. Those real drums were worth every cent. Great singing too. Original, yet accessible.

Quick review this week. I am on vacation (for two weeks), and I find it harder to sit at PC for an extended period of time when I have so much other stuff I have to do (all fun). I am playing an open mic tonight, so I need to practice some songs.

I really missed the whole World Cup thing.

Frank Canonica - Water For Tears - Nice song. I really love how his voice rises in chorus. I really need to try some of that one day. My only minor nit is that the spoken "H2O" part went on a bit too long. But still all good.

I bet most of my songs start out with very similar gibberish lyrics.

Sir Mick said he writes the lyrics down in almost a stream of consciousness fashion, without worrying about rhymes, etc. He goes back later and rewrites.

I should do more rewriting. But, on the other hand, by playing open mics, I get to rewrite the songs every time I play them. I play "Closing Down the Night" and may play it tonight with a new lyric.

My new mission is to learn some cover songs. Not so much because I like playing cover songs (I rather dislike it, actually), but to learn better how songs are structured. That's one part of this hobby/art/craft that I haven't really gotten a hold of so much.

Hate to bring up The Stones again, but I saw an interview with Keith once and he said that he sometimes will sit down and play a Buddy Holly song, for example (his example), over and over and often times it will turn into a new song. He said something like the first two times are practice and the third time it is his. That is also why I want to work on more covers.

When I was about 22, I suggested to a friend that we start a band. I was writing my song-poems at the time and I knew a few guitar chords, but I wasn't actually playing. He didn't know any instrument. But I knew there was something very attractive about starting a band. I was right. It's my one big musical regret.

The Continentals - Working Man's Blues - Wow. That's really smooth. Sounds like everyone is in the same room. Good job.

Laurier Tiernan - Ransacked - I love that crash and bang punk sound. Great song. Hits all the right spots.

The two that I think I agree with most are the drums and the timing. A bad case of drums can destroy an otherwise perfectly good song. Timing issues, as I can attest to, can also ruin a good song. I've listened to some of my songs and the timing issues make me cringe.

I watched the Fleetwood Mac "Destiny" video. I was pretty good. The guitar player was somewhat of a pain in the neck.

Not a big fan of The Roots either. I've been watching local musicians on Youtube. I want to see what the compitition is doing. Most of them a really talented musicians but their songwriting is, how do I say, local sounding (themes, etc.).

Yes, I'll be at the shore next week, so if there is a show, I probably won't be responding, or will be responding later in the week.

Sean Fellowes - World Peace - 60 tracks! Wow. Hired a drummer! Wow.

My problem with playing open mics is that I can't play all my songs on the guitar (many were written using presets, Qchord, Jamstudio, etc.). So I posted an add on Craig's List a few months back offering money for a guitarist to play my songs at open mics with me. The deal would be three songs per open mic and two shows a month. I didn't give any amount I would pay, but said I was open for discussion. I got one reply. The guy said he'd charge $50.00 per show. I thanked him and started trying to learn more of my songs on guitar.

This is really good song. It does have a very pro recording quality. The melody is superb. I love that electric guitar in break. Wow, this song keeps unfolding. Yes, Dave is right, great lead vocal voice. This was a real pleasure to listen to. You should be proud of your hard work on it. It paid.

. This was going to be a quick review.

Really enjoyed the show, all the tunes sounded really good, loved the feel of the last song the best but they were all great!

Can't wait for the next show, and I hope to do some recording yet this month.

Great show fellas. Listening to your podcast inspires me to get away from in front of the TV and finish a song. I particularly enjoyed the songs this week.

About the 10 mistakes-I would say that these can be common problems that we should all be mindful of. However, I think the biggest obstacle any part-timer faces is lack of experience. I personally know when a tune is sounding weird, but sometimes lack the skills to fix them. I certainly have the tools as well as most people these days. How to use them properly is another matter. There needs to be a preset somewhere in Cubase that fixes my crappy mix... And I think alot of people suffer from bad hearing(or poor monitoring). I've spent a few bucks on sound treatment for my room and it does make a big difference.

Wow - can't imagine that I've missed posting the past couple of shows. Sorry guys, been doing the vacation thing and generally being busy with chores (mostly staining the deck), Tony, my condolences to you re: England and the World Cup...

Frank Canonica - Water For Tears
Great song Frank! always love hearing your stuff - loved the lyrics.

The Continentals - Working Man's Blues

Yeah, this definitely sounded like it was in the same room - nicely done!

Laurier Tiernan - Ransacked

This was soooo cool! Took me on a trip similar to the Queens of the Stone Age - never know what's going to come next.

Sean Fellowes - World Peace
Fantastic tune Sean! Well, well, WELL done. Very ambitious, and I loved  the synths!

10 mistakes list - yeah, it's hard to look at your stuff objectively and see if you've done this kind of stuff, but sincerely, I can say that I can definitely improve in most of these areas. It's all part of the learning process huh? I can say that I'm tired of writing and mixing a song and then call it done, but that doesn't preclude that I don't think that there are still things I can do to improve it. Those are the thing that I take to the next song - mix things with a different mindset, try different techniques out, different effects...

Summer break - cheers to that! Take a well deserved break. I'd be more than happy to put up my hand to help out with the show.

Cheers. D

A month too late but I've been busy and been on holiday. About this re-writing thing. I'm a passionate advocate of it.

For me writing a song then not polishing it up would be to leave it unfinished. I also find it very rewarding from the 'creative' angle. I write, play it through [privately or in public] and tinker away. The little changes don't always add up to much but I often make radical alterations in the re-write stage; usually over the inclusion/exclusion of a bridge or a verse or two. Recording it and letting that inform a re-write can help but it's usually 'there' as a song before I record. Also it's a way of letting the song grow itself in a sense. The development can take unexpected directions I didn't originally intend just because I played it through and let it stew in my brain. Some of my best received songs have had a dozen re-writes. They 'change flavour' during this process.

I'm not claiming I always re-write. I don't. But I'm always open to the idea. It's also how I hone my song writing skills, its how I practise song writing, not just permanently starting from scratch, but trying to get the best out of a song idea. If I didn't do this I'd write a song and think...

"Hmm, that one had potential. Never mind, I'll get the next one right."

Why not get this one right?

I did a rewrite on "Closing Down the Night". I changed the key from C to A and slowed the tempo down. I added a G7 chord instead of a G (relative to key change). I completely rewrote stanza two and three, and added a bridge. The original break included the great Omegaman sax. I needed something to change the song up a bit when playing live. I actually wrote the lyric changes at work yesterday and peformed it live last night. It needs some smoothing out, but it worked well. I added something about the radio playing and wheels squealing. Imagine a car song without a radio and squealing wheels.
