Tony's RPM 2011 Thread - Song 10 Added 2/20/11 DONE!!!

Post by tonyoci » Tue Feb 01, 2011 5:00 pm

Thought I'd start a thread for my efforts and comments.

Started well today - Feb 1st - I was ready to go on my first track. Started with some simple guitar chords and have it built into a decent song. Lyrics are done and the whole thing should be finished tonight.

Not sure where I go from here since everything I do sounds the same :)

Ha, good point.

Truth is though that I have music issues not lyrics issues. I can definitely come up with crappy lyrics.

Just go with whatever comes. If you worry to much about begin different it's not going to be any fun anyway.

If I went with what comes everything would be exactly the same :)

I finished song 1, which I will post here Wednesday and I'm well into song 2. Song 2 is completely different from 1. Both songs were made from music with no clear idea of what I was going to do, both came fairly easily (though their quality is questionable). This has definitely been good for opening up the sluice gates so far. I do have some set ideas for some of the songs but those are not coming together as well (which is a lesson of course). Song 2 is 6/8 time, which is a first for me.

I've had some fun making an album at Bandcamp http://thetones.bandcamp.com/

First Song added

What What What

http://thetones.bandcamp.com/track/what-what-what

Pretty simple, just played some chords on the guitar to a loop (Data Becker), messed around with the perceived tempo here and there then banged it out :)

Second Song Added

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Strummer
http://thetones.bandcamp.com/album/the- ... e-strummer

Trying to be completely different. I also had a rendering problem that gave me ideas for removing some of the instrumentation through the song. I sent Dave a list of things I was going to work on and then thought "why bother" it's RPM. I cleaned a rough edge and I'm on to song 3.

Looks like you're off to a good start.
just remember to try an idea out even if it seems lame, you never know what it might lead to.

I was just suggesting them in a general sense.
maybe you've already tried this, but if you're stuck for where to go chord progression-wise, try taking whatever progression you have at the moment and:
- reversing it or switching a couple of the chords around.
- hold one or two of the chords for 1/2 or full measure longer.
- eliminate one of the chords in the progression you already have.
- rinse & repeat

LOL, rock & pop music only require you to have a good time doing it.
you don't need to worry about writing 'War & Peace' or even 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. :)

Song 3 is done
Let's Go

http://thetones.bandcamp.com/track/lets-go

A fun one, it was on my planning list and came out pretty much as I planned. Amy appears on backing vocals :) Clearly I had difficulties with the lyrics :) Hand played MIDI drums, a mixture of sampled and real hand claps. Judicious use of Clone Ensemble.

I am planning to send it to my new reformed local Arena Football team

Love the handclaps! The mix of the real and sampled make a cool, thick sound. And then comes the cowbell! :)

The extra vocals and clone ensemble worked great. Good job.

I guess this song does have lyrics, but has Tony inadvertently almost written an instrumental? lol

Let's go!

Good God, Man! This first song is fantastic! I don't believe I've ever heard you play walking lead licks like that. Sounds almost like great country-rock guitar.

:stick: I think this is super. Too much going on to comment (as I have to get back to the keys for song 2).

This one is as good as any you've done in the past, if you ask me. Wow. I thought the RPM Challenge was going to bring out some raw stuff, but this song has the full treatment.

Outstanding!

Bandcamp sounds much better than soundclick, in my opinion. I'll put them up on Bandcamp when I am done, but for now I am posting them on RPM and soundclick, just to get them up and out of the way.

This second song is boss too. Great tone, Tones. You still are a master homerecorder.

You are using keys on this one more than last (although last had some great piano licks in there). I am finding the keys are much easier to compose on, so I am thinking most of mine will be on keys. You play good keys.

Great stuff, Tony.

You've got three in the can already. That's wild. I've got to get to song 2.

Great lyrics too. You are doing a fine job.

Whoops...song 3 is kicking in...

This one is a cool rowdy party number. Lots of pushing and shoving. Good for breaks in N. F. L. football games. You hit a raw nerve on this one. Good work.

Thanks Sir Cracks-a-lot :)

I also find the keys easier to write songs on, it must be related to the, more, two handed nature of playing the guitar. I have found, via some self analysis, my brain can only handle two things at once so left and right hand and make up song is too much. Even though I use two hands on the keys, one is only mimicking the other so only one brain path is being used

Cool album title. Sounds like you have a good flow getting the songs out. Just don't wait until the last week with the next seven songs. ;)

Song 4 is done

Dressed in Black

http://thetones.bandcamp.com/track/dressed-in-black

Pretty dark for me but it was written using the www.homemadehitshow.com group written lyrics

The feel of the song started from a Hold Steady song but I decided to use the group written lyrics that were written as part of a Home Made Hit Show (www.homemadehitshow.com) effort a while back. Lyrics contributions came from Lucas, Andrew Richardson, Kerry Penley and Dave Cooper (hopefully I did not miss anyone).

I resurrected the Variax guitar for this one and was reminded how much I like playing that guitar. MAudio Drum Rig for the drums, MAudio Key Rig for the organ, Yamaha for the piano sounds, Toneport for the recording.

The mix was a challenge but I decide it was time to give up.

Lyrics

I still remember the heart tearing love you gave
Wild and burning, a powerful heat wave

But the agent of change he came like a foe
Wearing the night as dark barren cloak

They said you were not coming back
They sent me a photograph

From naked trees I hear the stark call of crows (Dressed In Black)
On the shoulder of men I see the falling of snow (Dressed In Black)
They bear what remains to a deep earth hole (Dressed In Black)
There’s a sheet thrown over as they lower it below (Dressed In Black)

so when I see you dressed in black
I wonder if you're coming back
from the destiny you call your own
from the streets you travel all alone

we pass the hat
They pass the gun
deep black boots that kick the trails
of blood & death & coffin nails

like a man who was asking to murder (dressed in black)
like a man who would smile no further (dressed in black)
alone cause the dark reaper has come (dressed in black)
and stolen from me what I'd built my world on (dressed in black)

What did you expect of me,
make my exit dressed in black

When I open my eyes the truth comes like a slap (dressed in black)
the angel is dark, top to bottom, front and back (dressed in black)
it lays in the earth and pretends to be trapped (dressed in black)
but sneaks in my clothes, in my lungs, in my pack (dressed in black)
it denies me a life I can never get back (dressed in black)
now and forever I'll be dressed in black (dressed in black)

Dressed in black
Dressed in black
Dressed in black
Dressed in black
