HMHS 214 - The Lonely Podcaster (4/29/11)

Post by tonyoci » Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:08 am

http://www.homemadehitshow.com - thanks.

I'm all alone this week so it's time for an old-school songwriting and home recording show.

There is a very little discussion this week, just music
  • You Are - David Cooper (and Ralph)
Samba - Stranger Than Fiction- Randall Hill and Lee Faith
Axis of Awesome - Four Chords
    Without You - Daren Sirbough
Wait - James McDaniel - Extrapedestrian

Just a quick note to Tony and Dave.

I don't make a lot of comments but I DO listen to every show, and sometimes more then once. This is by far my favorite podcast and one of the few that can inspire me to write music.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers and all ears....

Hi

Thanks for playing my song You Are.

Again a lot of brilliant songs - very interesting section about the 4 chord songwriting. - What are they?

Thanks Dave

Hey there,
It's been a while since I've posted....but here goes:
Mr Cooper nice work. The organ gave me a sixties flashback and I'm searching for my farfisa.

Stranger than fiction - WoW Great work as well. I loved the recording, I loved the lyrical content, even the ever repeating background vocal. As usual it will either inspire me to go write a song or burn all of my stuff and join a monastery.

Four Chords - Always brilliant.

Daren - Again good stuff! I plan to go back and listen again, which is always a good thing.

James - I hate to bring the American Idol or British Idol moment to the forum but I will.
Nice song, nice arrangement, solid recording but watch the pitch on the vocals.
Bend in to them baby! I know....I'm the king out out-o-tune singing

Hi,

Just listened to the past two episodes.

Daren's track is really outstanding, but then he probably has a lot more ambition to "make it" than your average home recorder.

Also very impressed by the vocals on "Samba".

Thanks guys, looking forward to next show

I just wanna chime in and say that I also listen to every single show and enjoy them greatly. I try to post but I feel that I should listen to each song 2 or 3 times before commenting and I often don't find the time to do that.

The Four Chords
They sound like I - V - VIm - IV. In C that would be C - G - Am - F, right?

Okay, I've only listened to the show once but i will say that Stranger Than Fiction really impressed me. Pro singing and production and the song was just great.

liked the radio announcer jingles.

Axis of Awesome - Four Chords
seen this before, it's pretty funny.
prefer the previous version though:

Without You - Daren Sirbough
great sound, great production, sounds very pro
curious what he's using to record. interface, DAW, etc.

Thanks for the show!

Hello everyone.
Thanks for all the kind comments about our song "Samba", especially about the vocals. Lee really did sing his lead vocal as a first take and the adlibs at the end were not rehearsed. My "control room" is in the basement under where the kitchen is upstairs. My wife happen to be in there while he was singing this song. I got a few questions like "what was Lee shouting about?" and "what kind of song is that?" after he left. Good times.

Tony, mics and preamps really do make a difference. I don't or would never claim to be a very good engineer, but better tools will make your life easier. Really.

As to the other songs:

"You Are"- I liked the sound of the double tracked vocals on the chorus. It added a nice touch to the overall vocal sound. It helped the tuning issues memtioned above.

"Without You"- Very nicely done. Impressed. I would have loved to hear some vocal harmonies on the chorus. That's just me though.

"Wait"-really liked the break where it went down to just bass and drums. Very "Dear Prudence" like, but I sure you know that.

Hi Tony and Dave

Just to let you know I'm still here, listening, and enjoying

Particularly enjoyed "Samba" from this weeks show BTW :^:

Also, I was convinced that when Darren's song finished you were going to say it was one of your "compare with a pro song" sections - hats off to Darren for that.

Take care all :)

Good show. I enjoyed the music. I am finding that I actually enjoy (and learn) more from the discussions on songwriting, etc. It inspires me.

Since you didn't discuss anything in depth, here is what I was thinking during the show:

Yes, all those songs have four chords, but does that mean they are the only chords throughout the entire songs? Or are there other chords during the chorus/verses/etc., and they are only playing the part of the song that is written around those four chords?

The other thing I wanted to mention was that the more I play piano the less I like the notes above middle C. Is that weird? The lower notes seem easier to sing to. I searched for a pro who uses primarily lower octives, but couldn't really find anything for certain.

Similarly, I don't post a lot anymore (now they have tightened up net access at work), but I do listen each week (on the ipod at work!).
