Apparently not. That is the weak spot. I suppose if the intention is to use it as an interface virtual tracks is a non-issue. I think it's best to think of it as two completely separate products living in the same body:
1) on the go stereo recorder for podcasters and news people
2) interface to computer for home recordist, with built in mic, vocal effects and guitar effects based on Zoom G2.

It's actually starting to make more sense to me.

I have asked Zoom about it - the answer is:

1.) We are not planning updated similar product like PS-04.
2.) The H4 is field recorder like Edirol (Roland) R-09, Sony PCM-D1 or M-Audio Micro Track 24/96.
3.) So it has no drum machine and pattern/song structure.

The H4 is not the next step after the PS04 !

The PS04 is still the current 4Track recorder for people like us.

btw. I just released a PS04SongEditor:

Wierd move by Zoom. If they wanted to make a field recorder-just make a damn field recorder. No journalist is gonna buy it for the guitar effects!

It looks like they're trying to please 2 camps at the same time.

Yet by putting in 4 tracks and guitar effects it'll undoubtably make the interface more confusing to the ENG crowd who just want a simple recorder (with non-compressed wav, good mics).

And most importantly they are alienating all their ps02/ps04/future fans by not putting enough inside to make it a stand alone.

I'm still in the "puppy love" phase of my ps-04 ownership so I'm happy it's not obsolete but I was actually thinking of putting out the idea to create a sort of online petition to ZOOM to update the ps-04 (or at least not to abandon it completely). I thought of this before the H4 of course, so I guess it's a little too late now but what do you guys think?

My question is will they play nice together? If I have a friend that is into my PS-04, can he buy an H4 and have the output from both work together on a computer? It seems like a combination of the two recorders would be a great synergy. The H4 could act as a USB interface and the PS-04 would give you the drum and song creation. I need the drum kit in a box for my projects, but I might consider picking up the H4 later on in addition to the PS-04.
