I'm thinking of buying the R16, it really sounds wonderful!

Although I read the manual (which didn't gave me a clear answer) and searched this forum, I still have one question:

does the r16 record pre- or post-fader? So can you still record an instrument while turning the fader down? (I don't see the use of doing that, it's really just an example).

and what about the r24? pre- or post-?

thanx

It's in the manual all right > page 6
While recording, the fader will adjust the monitoring level and therefore recording is done pre-fader.
So yes, you can record with the fader down and it's the same for the R24 (page 27 in the R24 manual).

Great thanx!

Why asking this question?

Because I live in France, and the owner of the shop where Im going to buy it has called to the "french" Zoom, and they told us that recording is post-fader!

Anyway, thanx for the quick reply!

For each input channel there's a gain control and an output fader. So you can control the level of the material being recorded as well as the volume for each track. This lets you control the level of not only the track being recorded, but also everything previously recorded. As an example of using this, when recording the final drums my buddy likes to have the drums, bass, and piano loud and everything else at a low level or even muted. This allows him to focus on the rhythm section while using the vocals only as a reference to the current point in the song without distracting him.

To directly answer your original question: yes, you can completely eliminate the sound of the track being recorded if you chose to do so.

I use my R16 as a live mixer. So two channels from my backing trax , one from guitar and another from my mic that runs thru a Digitech Vocalist workstation. I run a second line from my mic that is tapped before it goes into the vocalist and plug that into another channel on the R16, and turn the fader off. This way I get the processed vocal and also a dry unprocessed vocal. I mix the files in Nuendo. The unprocessed vocal can go into Melodyne and get a "tune up" pitch wise. Once its had any pitchiness fixed, I can then route it to the vocalist workstation and re record the harmonies.
That would be one use for being able to record pre fader.
