Rxx Track Sheet .pdf (fillable, saveable, printable)

Post by selbalicious » Fri Nov 30, 2012 5:03 pm

[updated on 12/1/2016 to reflect new file location on kevinselby.com]
Hey gang.

Hope all is well with you these days.

If you'll recall, I created an MS Access 2013 database that allows you to store information about your projects and related tracks for the R16/R24/R8 devices.
From that database I created a "blank" track sheet (in .pdf format) that you could print out and hand-write yer data.

Someone (in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=18497) suggested that I create a fillable/saveable/printable version of that track sheet for use with the R16/R24 recorders (might work for R8 but I'm unclear of the differences).

Anyway...I am proudly announcing the release of Version 1.0.0 of the "fillable/saveable/printable" Adobe .pdf file for a Tracksheet type of use:

See: http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/upload ... veable.pdf

Here's a NON-fillable "printable" blank track sheet:
http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/upload ... ntable.pdf

Once you fill it out, you can "save" it (which will force you to save it out as a NEW filename) and your changes that you typed in will be saved. So you could technically work on the track sheet over successive days and just keep adding to it.

It was quite fun learning the gory guts of Adobe Acrobat Pro let me tell you. NOT the greatest development environment in my opinion.

The architecture is as follows:

1. Contains 24 Track records that can be used as either Mono or Stereo track listings. For Stereo tracks, simply identify them as such in the Track Name field (e.g., "Track 5/6") and tick the Stereo Link? checkbox. Soooo...obviously...you could simply use all 24 locations to describe 24 MONO tracks/files if you wished. BUT...because you may not use ALL 24 tracks and/or you'll use a mixture of stereo and mono tracks, creating a limit of 24 track locations seemed "good enough" for most R16/R24 users. IF YOU NEED MORE THAN 24 TRACKS TO DESCRIBE YOUR PROJECT: then simply switch to the database version (you *may* need to download the free MS Access "runtime") and you can have as many tracks as you want.
RxxDB.accdb - viewtopic.php?f=17&t=14154 (or just go here: http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/uploads/zoom/ and look for RxxDB.accdb or just go here: http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/upload ... xxDB.accdb
2. Supposedly, I should be able to create the .pdf file such that users can edit the various drop-down lists (Send/Return Reverb and Chorus as well as Insert Effect, etc.). If you can't do this in Version 1.0.0, then maybe a future version will allow this. I don't know whether the effect names (both Send/Return and Insert) are the same between the R16 and R24). So hang in there on that one. YOU CAN SIMPLY TYPE YOUR OWN VALUES INTO THE DROP-DOWNS IF YOU NEED TO.
3. Obviously the goal here was to create a simple yet powerful tool to document your projects. Therefore, use it ANY way you can find that will help you. Don't just assume that because it's built one way that you can't use it some other way. Have a ball.

Enjoy.

Alright...sooo....regarding the drop-down lists for things like Send/Return Reverb and Chorus, the Insert effect drop-downs and basically every other drop-down in the .pdf form:

I misread the capabilities of an "extended" .pdf file. Instead of allowing the end user to actually edit the list (in other words, you could replace the default Send/Return Reverb choices with your particular units defaults or your own custom presets), the best Adobe seems to offer is that the end user can simply completely ignore the list and type in their own value.

So what that means is that if the R24's built-in Send/Return presets are completely different from the R16's (what this form was based on), then R24 users will have to simply type in their particular preset values.

I suppoooooose I could go download the R24 and R8 manuals and see if I could grab those preset lists and either add them to the drop-downs in question (sort of a "one .pdf file fits all" kind of thing), OR create three separate .pdf files for each of the models (R8, R16, and R24).

What do y'all think? It will be easier to maintain ONE .pdf file that simply has all three model's presets in it and I could make it really obvious (with little headings inside the drop-downs) which units presets you're currently scrolling through.

Thoughts?? Does anyone even care??

One more thing...apparently...there are ways to either "attach" or "embed" a little XML file containing the data for various drop-downs and then perhaps the end user could edit the XML file and thus customize their version of the .pdf.
OR perhaps there's a way to pull in data from an external XML file sitting in the same folder as the .pdf and populate drop-downs that way (and again, allow the end user to simply edit the XML file to customize their particular Track sheet).

Now...keep in mind that ALL of this functionality ALREADY exists in the MS Access database. You can easily and freely customize the data in that little database to match your particular Rxx series of recorder.

I'm just intrigued right now as to whether it's possible to literally build a little "database" type app out of a simple lowly .pdf file. Heh heh.

Hi
I tried to download your Track sheet but the site reports 404 not found. It seem all the zoom inherent documents are erased. Could you upload again it or send me a copy, pls?

Many thanks

There's currently something amiss with the webserver at kevinselby.com. Hopefully it will repair itself and things will go back to normal. I'll keep my eye on it.

Just re-uploaded the files.

See: http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/uploads/zoom/

Here is what they do:

1. Rxx_BlankTrackSheet_Printable.pdf - this is simply a single blank track sheet, suitable for printing, and then writing by hand onto the printout.
[You will need the free Adobe Reader from adobe.com to view this file]
Link: http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/upload ... ntable.pdf

2. Rxx_BlankTrackSheet_Fillable_Saveable.pdf - this is a .pdf file that you can edit, then save, and of course, print - when necessary. Keep in mind that for all of the "drop-downs" (Send/Return effects, Insert Effects, etc.) you can simply type in whatever value you want (I didn't make that too clear...sorry!). For example, I'm pretty sure I simply stole the values from the R16 manual for the built-in effect presets (both Send/Return as well as Insert) and you might be using it for the R8 or R24. In those cases, simply type in which effect type you used and ignore the drop-down values.
[You will need the free Adobe Reader from adobe.com to view/edit/save this file]
Link: http://kevinselby.com/wp-content/upload ... veable.pdf

3. RxxDB.accdb - this is a rather cool little MS Access 2013 database that ALSO allows you to generate Track sheets (for any of the Rxx series of recorders).
What's cool about this little tool, is that you can edit the drop-down values for the Send/Return Reverb and Chorus (these are simple static values that you can change) *and* the values for Insert Effects (these are table-based and it takes you to the effects table to edit the values). Soooo...in other words, you COULD completely customize the drop-down values for YOUR particular Rxx device and then you'd have those custom values for use in future track sheets. Hope that makes sense. The other value that the MS Access database gives you is that you can easily print each Project and then save the report out as .pdf and you're essentially golden at that point.
Final summary: you can right-click on ANY of the drop-downs and choose "Edit List Items" and customize them.
[IF you do not have a copy of MS Access 2013, you will need to download the Microsoft Access 2013 Runtime from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=39358]

Hey these are great - Thank you! Quite a bit of effort went into these, I can see. All of those lists... I guess you could copy the drop-downs you made for the multiple tracks, but even making the lists for just one track -- a lot of work for you to make this template. This will be very handy.
Thanks again.

You are a true asset to this community Kevin. I've only had this device for a few days and I've already learned more from your posts than reading the manual cover to cover. This is a great tool. I can see how useful it will to save a copy in every project folder I export. Many thanks!

Awwww.....very kind of you.
I just think this particular device was an amazing product at an amazing time.
Plus I needed an excuse to learn how to build a fillable, portable, database-like .pdf form using Adobe Pro.
My excuse, your gain.

Now just get me my Zoom R32.....Zoom corporation...you listenin'??

As a total aside...and in a ginormous show of shameless self-promotion, I give you: "At My Old School" (see: http://kevinselby.com/at-my-old-school/).

This is an album that still has a ways to go (maybe 3-4 months of melody and solo re-work, possible re-arranging, etc.) and I plan to trade out ALL the drums with real live drummers (from various online services).

The album really showcases the Yamaha Tyros 5 keyboard...and, sadly, no Zoom products were used in the making of that album...but I learned a ton of stuff USING the R16 that would later help me in my overall recording/mixing/arranging strategies.

Also, here's some discussion of it over at the Tyros forum: http://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index. ... 599.0.html

Since y'all are musicians, the dialogue might interest you.

Anyway...hope y'all are doing just great! I happen to be doing fantastic right now in my life...weird things man...weird wonderful things...I wish we had time to discuss...but sadly, we do not...
