Stereo or mono

Post by lordspudz » Thu Mar 09, 2017 2:43 pm

Hi all
Might seem a daft question but is there any real benefit to recording using stereo linked inputs instead of mono?

Thanks

If the source material is stereo, it simplifies future manipulation -- typically one level fader (you still have to adjust the input PEAKing separately), a single balance control, and (on the R-series) a single file.

Stereo sources would be (not complete):

Using X/Y or M/S (post-matrixed) microphone to collect ambient sound placement
Drum machine or keyboards with stereo outputs
Most consumer audio (MP3 player, amplifiers, TVs, computer sound card output)

Mono sources:
Single microphone for solo vocal or instrument
Electric guitar
Drum machine/keyboard with only mono outputs

Mono sources will rely upon you to use the panning control to position them spatially within the stereo mix-down; otherwise they would all be piled on top of each other.
