Mic phantom power: Can I add external PP so I can mic (that requires PP) into any of the 16 channels, or am I going to be limited to only # 5 and 6 with the built in PP?
Well, first off -- there are only 8 inputs and a bank switch: Anything you can do with 1-8 thereby applies to 9-16 (5/6 also apply to 13/14)

Second -- the R16 doesn't really care what you do outboard, as long as it sees something between (consumer) line-level (minimum GAIN) and typical microphone level (increasing GAIN settings).

May not be all that cheap though... https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... aQodPTUONg for just two channels ($70), plus you'll need an additional pair of XLR extension cables https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XLR3 ($18 * 2 => 36... total $106).

Question: Do you intend to have more than two condenser microphones in use at a time?

If not, you may wish to study how the R16 handles track/file assignments -- so you record using 5/6, then reassign those files to other tracks for playback/mixing, and record new stuff still on 5/6.
