Bad experience with OSX 10.13.4

Post by dobrojoe » Thu Apr 05, 2018 5:56 am

Hi, I just got my R16 and by itself, it works fine. Connecting to my iMac is another story. First time I installed the driver (1.5.0) and restarted, the Mac would not boot at all. The progress bar would travel across the screen very slowly and when it got to the end, it just stuck. Not being able to boot my Mac, I couldn't run the uninstaller. I was able to boot from an external disk and reinstall the system and after that, the Mac booted and I was able to use the uninstaller. What a waste of time!

I decided to try reinstalling a second time and the install worked. I thought I would try the card reader function. There was a loud buzzing noise and the Mac shut down. I gingerly tried it a second time and got the card reader to work. I then tried to use the surface controls with Logic Pro X using the Mackie Control. The Mac hung again with a frozen mouse.

I've been using Macs since 1984 and I have never come across such a badly behaved piece of hardware.

Smells like a software (driver, not hardware) problem. From your mail it is clear that the driver software is causing problems right from the start.

dobrojoe,

Why did you reinstall?

Seems to me next step should have been to power up the iMac with no R16 connected. If the iMac powers up then you could have uninstalled the driver, rebooted so no software fragments were left in memory, delete the driver from your hard drive and then downloaded a fresh copy.

I agree with you about one statement though, your iMac sure behaved badly, I haven't had any of my computers lock up like that while installing new hardware.

As stated in the instructions, I removed all USB devices and closed all running programs before installing. It could be that there is a conflict with another driver, I have quite few. In the meantime, I will just use the SD card slot on the back of my Mac to transfer songs and my Focusrite USB Audio interface and forgo the Zoom driver.

I'm glad your iMac has the built-in SD card slot. That makes it very easy to swap files from the R16 to the iMac or vice-versa.

I'm looking forward to hearing your songs. I hope you'll post links.
