R24 - all tracks, even ones with faders down, go to output

Post by GertW » Mon Jun 25, 2018 8:34 am

We have a R24 set up in our rehearsal room for recoding 8 tracks when we practice (Guitar, Bass, Vocals, Background vocals, 2 tracks drum overheads, bassdrum, snare).

We go out from the R24 (both outputs R-L) into a PA, and adjust which track goes to the output using the track faders. Normally all track faders are muted (set lowest), except Vocals and Background vocals. The output level is adjusted also with Master Fader.

This all worked fine, we could record (all indicators of all tracks RED) and at the same time use the PA to hear the vocals while jamming.

However, recently ALL tracks, even the muted ones (i.e. faders down) were routed to the output. We do not want that, and obviously this should not happen that a track goes to output with track faders down (track output muted), but have no idea what the cause is.

Last week at rehearsal a restart of the R24 brought a change (everything worked as it should) but yesterday the same problem again.

We restarted again and also created a new project with settings reset – no change, muted tracks still go to output.

Is this a (known) software problem? Or is the R24 broken?

Or any other advice?

Wild guessing but...

Did you have some send/return effect active? Regardless of what the manual shows about S/R effects taking from input/track and returning to input/track, since S/R effects are applied to all tracks/inputs based upon track parameter send levels, I can easily see the DSP basically consolidating all the inputs into one (stereo) data stream for the S/R effect.

It is hard to declare something "broken" when most operations are performed in software. If you open the track parameters display, move to the fader level, and scroll from track to track -- do the levels shown match the fader position? (-inf is 0, 0dB is 100, and maximum will be 127). Remember -- the faders are virtual (because you could switch between track banks and don't want the banks to suddenly change the mix). One often has to slide the fader up and down to make it catch up to the numeric parameter before the fader will affect the track.

Hey, thanks a lot.
Yes, we had S/R effects applied to the background vocals, and I have already been wondering why this effect was still there after project reset.
Thanks a heap for the great tip!
I will try your suggestion next time we practice, maybe not before next weekend :-(
Will give you feedback then!
thanks again!

Manual, page 90...

If by some chance you created a new project and still had the "setting" at "Continue" it would copy the effects from the previous project.

Your tip Wulfraed with the fader levels was spot on (went to the rehearsal room this evening).
Was a bit tricky to find the "track parameters display" (it was not under "Track" button but under "Pan/EQ"), but yes, there the fader level was 100 although the manual fader was down at 0. Manually reset the level to 0 with the wheel (also worked by sliding the manual fader up and down as you suggested) and voila, everything works now as expected. Thanks a lot!

And as for the effects still carrying over into a new project: I created a new one and did not "continue" the settings. Will check next time at band rehearsal.
