Zoom G3X Expression Pedal Problems

Post by GV » Thu Nov 10, 2016 12:12 am

Hi,
I recently bought the wonderful Zoom G3X multi-effects guitar floor processor, and generally am having a lot of fun with it.

One problem I am having though, is that the expression pedal seems to randomly lose its connection to the wah at times, and the only way that I have found to get that back is to do a factory reset, which of course means that I would have to restore any backed up (edited) effects (I have not created any yet, but will be doing so), which would be time consuming, and frustrating.

Has anyone had this problem with the expression pedal, and if so, have you come up with any solutions other than a factory reset?

I would like to try to assign the wah functionality to the pedal on the occasions when this problem occurs, but cannot get the screens to come up that the manual says should appear when assigning parameters to the expression pedal.

I have re-calibrated the pedal several times, but this does not seem to help or make any difference.

I would be grateful for any help with this.

Thanks.

For anyone else experiencing this problem, I thought that I would post the solution.

And thanks to someone here, on another thread, and on another site, for helping me to solve this.

The answer is sort of in the manual, but it is not at all clear, and misses out one step.

To (re-) associate the expression pedal with a function, one does the following:

1. Scroll to the effect that one wants to have the expression pedal control (e.g., wah)
2. Click the footswitch to turn the pedal 'On' (light glows red)
3. Press the 'Total' button, in the row of buttons running horizontally across the top of the G3X
4. Go to 'Page' option of Middle Effect - specific instructions are in the manual on pages 17 - 19
5. OPERATE the expression pedal while doing the above
6. Return to Patch

Notes
I cannot remember exactly what I did in step 4, in terms of changing the settings, but there are very few options/permutations, and - if you strum the guitar, and keep on operating the expression pedal with your foot while adjusting these parameters, you will hear the effect kick in at some point.

The key to this procedure is to:
1. Have the effect that you want to associate the pedal with set to 'On'
2. Go to 'Total'
3. Operate the expression pedal while changing settings

This was really frustrating me, so I am glad to have this resolved.

I hope that this is helpful to others.

Thanks for taking the time to post the solution. I'm sure your posts will be very useful to other other pedal users.

And Thanks for your "Thanks", Jim.

I actually just posted the solution on this forum to a thread that the OP had posted the solution to on another board, but had neglected to post here.

I believe that if one receives help from others, one should return the favour by posting solutions to these kinds of problems.

Back to the specific issue I was having, I also – believe it or not – had a reply from Zoom, although the fellow basically reiterated what was in the manual.

I responded with a polite suggestion to be more specific, and included much of what I have posted about here in my reply, suggesting that they update/amend future editions of the manual.

Actually, I do not know if there are threads on here in which users make suggestions of this nature for amending manuals, and if not, maybe there should be.

I know that another source of confusion that I saw a few people post about in my research to try to solve this problem was a question that I had had too - the wording/marketing of the Zoom G3X manual suggests that there are 100 'blank' User banks or patches, rather than the reality that one has to customize the existing patches.

Thanks, once again, Jim.

GV,

This forum is an unofficial, fan forum. I am not aware of any indirect or direct relationship between Zoom and the forum. In the past various members have posted product suggestions, firmware issues or manual corrections but there has never been any sign that Zoom saw or used the information. Some manufacturers value having a direct relationship with their customer but Zoom does not seem to be one of those manufacturers.
