Zoom Q4N/Windows 10 breaks up recording into multiple files

Post by Julzology » Sun Feb 05, 2017 10:11 am

We have a Zoom Q4N and we're having trouble transfering files to our computer.

Last night I recorded my husband's performance (jazz quartet). Two sets. When I look on the camera there are two files. When I plug the camera into my Windows 10 laptop I get 8 .mov files. Two files on the camera, 8 files on my computer. Weirdly it splits the files at 17:07, most but not not all the time.

The recording settings are Video: 3M HD/30 24M, Audio: WAV 96/24

Is this Windows having trouble with a .MOV file? Why would that happen? And, to further complicate the matter the files are not sequentially named/numbered so it's difficult to put them in the correct order (and of course Windows just lists them alphabetially)

Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the forum!

We will give you the best advice we can but we do need a little more information.

On your computer, what windows computer program are you importing the files into? Are you moving or coping the files from the Q4N to the computer?

I'm not importing the files. I'm just opening Windows File Explorer and looking at the files. When I plug the camera in and just look at the files using Windows File Explorer, there are 8 files. Likewise, when I use the Zoom Handyshare software I see 8 files. But if I disconnect the camera from the computer and just look at the files on the camera, there are only 2 files there.

I wonder if it's a driver issue.

Take a look at the Zoom Q4n user manual. What you're looking for is for a description of the folder and file tree on the Q4n when viewed by the computer as mass memory storage. I suspect that what you'll find is some of the files you're seeing are support files that "tell" the Q4n how to associate the audio and video with each other.

That is not the case. They are all .MOV files and the actual video, which on the camera shows as being an hour and 9 minutes long, is split up into multiple files of different sizes. The first split usually occurs at 17:07 for some reason. I'm having to use Adobe Premier Elements to put the pieces back together so that I have a complete song. When I combine the videos the split is not noticeable but I can't figure out why the video is being split into pieces. Some pieces are only a few seconds long. The file naming convention is weird too because some of the files are called ZOOM0001, ZOOM0002 etc. and some of the files don't have the ZOOM in the beginning only the ZO so ZO0001, ZO0002. All are .MOV files and all contain parts of the video which appears as one video on the camera.

I suspect that each file is approaching 2 GB in size, which is a max file size for the FAT file system or something like that. This is a common situation for video files which are very large.

Hopefully if you sort by create time or modify time you'll get the clips in the right order.

I think you're right and I have been able to put them back together using Adobe Premier Elements. Seamlessly, just drop the two pieces in to the project and it's like they were never separated. At least now I know why it's happening.
