R16 issue with SD card

Post by Guts Knucklebone » Wed May 24, 2017 2:26 pm

So I was doing some recording on my R16 and the whole machine suddenly shut off, no "Goodbye See You" or anything, just dead. I thought maybe it was the plug came loose but when I took out the SD card, it turned back on fine. Then I put it back in and it shut off again. I tried a different SD card and it worked fine. The SD card is fried, won't work on any device. And the R16 seems to be back to normal with a different SD in it. But I don't understand:
A) why would the SD card suddenly go dead like that.
B) why would the R16 go completely dead with a bad SD card in it. Why wouldn't it just say "disk error" and stay on?

Thank you for your help.

No good guesses for your questions. Spooky. I would have been less surprised if you said the R16 was fried. Going to be very difficult to trust it for awhile. How long have you had the R16? Off brand SD card? USB or external power?

No it's a SanDisk from Fred Meyer, and it was external power. I am going to contact Zoom about this. But I have to wonder if there's a problem with these machines they knew about, since they included a yellow slip saying they are not responsible for data loss from anything that happens to SD cards.

I wouldn't think so. I think the yellow slip is a lawyer / legal thing just to cover all the bases. I know I "lost" my first Zoom MRS-8 project due to my haste and misunderstanding of the MRS-8 controls. Same thing with my first Canon digital camera. I bought the camera during the first day of a one week business trip. I got home with a week of taking pictures while learning the camera features and "lost" them all because I deleted instead of write protecting the photos. Both events taught me to never do anything of value until you are real familiar with the recording device. Mistakes happen.
