New Zoom Effects from 2019 NAMM

Post by stubbsonic » Sun Jan 27, 2019 12:01 pm

They've updated their G1on/G1xon and B1on/B1xon to the new G1 Four/G1x Four and B1 Four/B1x Four. They seem to have moved them closer to the G3n/B3n series. For example, you can install effects & presets with the Guitar Lab software, and the enclosure & UI look more similar to the G3n/B3n series. The price is still at the entry level, but with more features added. We'll have to see/hear some reviews, but this has the potential to be a fantastic entry-level product from Zoom.

The strangest and potentially coolest product they unveiled is the GCE-3 Guitar Lab Circuit Emulator. It's a tiny USB audio interface that looks like a palm-sized G3n. It has onboard DPS and lets you load an effects configuration from the Guitar Lab software (I think from any of the models!) and run them while connected to your computer. I couldn't tell if it would run in standalone mode in any way. I also couldn't tell if the display and tiny knobs/buttons were fully (or even partially) functional. I look forward to learning more about that one.

I know it is probably nothing like it, but I love the original Zoom G1. It was still pretty simple like the 505 series, but added much more. I love the fact that it had harmonized pitch shift and a full 5 second delay. The knobs on mine broke a bit back, but oddly enough I just found one on eBay for $30 the other day and I should have it tomorrow.

You're not the first person I've heard being nostalgic about that particular model! Let us know if it lives up to your expectations!

One thing is sure , newbies, hobbyist and beginners are spoiled because of this , i remember back in the days multi effects dont sound that good, now even presets sound good and the quality you can get from entry level units sound bettter.

It's true. And in many ways, these cheaper (and older) Zoom boxes are underrated in the used market. I don't know why people turn their noses up at these boxes!!

It is true. I've recorded many jams with preset patches. And I think a lot of people today unfairly judge Zoom based on their early 90s models. Truth be told, the amp sim is really what sucked back then. If you put the 505 in front of a good amp, it had some great sounds.

As far as the G1 I ordered goes, I know it sounds good. You do have to tweak a bit though, but it has some great sounds. Below is a site for people to post their patches. I was going by Jusme there and I posted 5 patches before it broke. I did upload some samples though if you want to check them out.

Cool. Just listened to all five. Nice how you were able to get a reasonably musical sounding sort-of-sitar. Was that mostly flanger that did the sweep effect?

The distortions sounded good (though I didn't much care for the Rush one, just my tastes, though).

stubbsonic,

Your write-up reads as though you attended NAMM. Thanks for taking time to share your experience with the forum. Nothing new from Zoom on the audio recording front I assume.

Stubbsonic, it looks like it was phaser. The patch was originally posted almost 3 years ago, so I had to go look on that site, the settings are there.

I was just checking a couple forums and watching some YT vids. The Zoom site now has the new products listed. I'm not sure I would recognize a new recording product amongst the list of products shown. The GCE-3 is shown with audio interfaces.

I just saw TC Electronics released "June-60" which is an emulation of the analog chorus on the Juno 60. I love that chorus. However, in their quest to make the pedal "look" authentic, they just have two big orange buttons I and II. It has mono & stereo mode, but no mix knob. Yup. No mix knob. So, if you don't have a loop switcher with parallel option, your stuck with a 50/50 chorus. Boooooo.

On the upside, it's only $50.

Yea, it's possible they've settled on the effects that ship with units, or they knew they were working on a firmware update and decided to hold on publishing the list until it was finished. In any case, the G1(X) Four/B1(X) Four can load effects via Guitar Lab. I wonder if they'll update those offerings any time soon.

I've noticed in the past Zoom will show equipment in January at NAMM but manuals, firmware and other support material won't be available for download until sometime in April when the product is in the distribution chain.

At NAMM 2019, Zoom has announced the release of a new recorder called the H3-VR with a 4-capsule Ambisonic mic. It allows you to record audio that can later be processed into full 360 degree audio. Where mid-side mics give you a stereo image through some clever matrixing, this Ambisonic thing let's you create fully immersive 360 audio and hear details from any point in that sphere. Zoom is making this next-gen recording capability available for $350. That is amazing!

Now in some ways, this isn't that much of a stretch. With the H2n, we had 4 capsule, 4 track recording in a small format. This uses capsules in a different configuration, and uses some new software to create the ambisonic format. The design had to be a bit different to get at sound from most angles. Even the cone shape is an attempt to have the mics "hear" what is partially blocked by the device chassis.

Unfortately there is some distortion on the audio that I think isn't from the unit, but rather just from not setting the levels on the camera correctly. I don't think it's from the unit-- (I hope not).

The UI looks to be quite similar to the G3n. Nice that are extra buttons and display features to help you know where you are on the interface.

Some of those presets need some tweaking, but the basic goodness appears to be there, assuming that distortion is only clipped video audio and not some other weirdness.
