F8 file size & Ambisonic recording

Post by allebaug » Sat Feb 02, 2019 2:28 pm

The F8 is set to max 2G file size.

I was recording with the Sennheiser AMBEO mic: four mic capsules in the head, and four XLR outputs connected to F8 XLR inputs 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The Ambisonic recording hit 1G file size, and a 2nd continuation file was initiated in a new folder. The continuation file in the 2nd folder was ~0.5G.

Anyone have this issue, and why was the recording split at 1G size???

The recording is split into 1 GB chunks for 1 of two reasons. Reason 1: the recorder can not address files larger than 1 GB. Typically this restriction is because of an inherit limitation of the operating system. Reason 2: The recorder temporarily stores the recording in RAM and transfers the recording to permanent storage in one long operation. My guess is the answer is reason 1 but I do not know for certain that that is the reason.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. Either reason makes sense. I was testing a new mic at the same time, on XLR 5. I could imagine 3 more concurrent connections, and an ultimate recording RAM capacity needed of 18G if all are in sync, with a 2G limit, including a 2G stereo mix output file. Plus extra RAM for the OS and the mechanics of writing files to the SDs while continuing to record the next take.

I understand the break/take and SD write for the AMBEO file at 2G (if above reasons apply), but not for also breaking the XLR 5 and the output stereo streams, both well under 2G. And I understand the logic of fully clearing memory and the "take" process at "a" 2G limit, but the execution and logic of splitting non-2G recordings or output, is hard to accept.

My F8 (and F8n) write 2GB files all the time. I recommend formatting the SD cards in the F8. I don't do Ambisonic recordings but use all 8 tracks and write to a single polywave file.

Unless you changed your default settings, the file-size limit (or even accidentally touching the record button) will create a new file in the same folder, and not create a new folder.
