Zoom F8 and 1 TB SDXC Card

Post by buckeyeman2019 » Fri Apr 19, 2019 4:45 pm

Hello,

My Zoom F8 has provided pretty good service so far. I use it mainly for bird/wildlife acoustic recording at a remote site. In 2017 it ran nearly continuously from late April into late October, being paused due to either card swaps, marine battery swaps, or reaching the end of the ~10 day interval that could be accommodated by the 512 GB SDXC card.

Well, I wondered recently if the unit could actually accept a 1 TB card, and it can! The new Lexar 1 TB SDXC LSD1TCBNA633 seems to work fine in the unit. Using this card will now double the recording interval to ~20 days in a 2-channel configuration at 24-bit/96 kHz. That will be a big help in trip planning to visit the remote recording site. The manual says the max card size is 512 GB, but I think that is because 1 TB cards weren't available when the unit was designed and placed into production.

At any rate, I sent an email to Zoom USA to let them know about the 1 TB card, and they said they would notify engineering @ Zoom Japan.

Hopefully this may help another user out there, regardless of the application.

Brad

Does it show a full 1T under SD Information, and test out during Performance? Otherwise, good information.

Following SD card design specs, the SDXC cards in the F8 are formatted exFAT, and a capacity limit of 2T.

Yes to both q's.
First photo: SD1 is the 1 TB card, SD2 is a 512 GB card, all channels off.
Second photo: SD1 only, with channels 1 & 2 only enabled.
Quick Performance check passes.

buckeyeman2019,

Welcome to the forum! Thanks for time to share this information with the forum.

For those interested, the SanDisk knowledge base has a very nice summary of SD card type capabilities and speeds. The summary includes a link to the SD Association brochure.
