In Show 66 we put up some files for you to mix.

In show 67 we discuss what went into the recording, and what Ryan, Jesse and Myself (Jon) used for their mix.

I'm going to post attach all the submissions that were sent in below.

Feel free to submit your own and tell us a bit about what went into your mix. There's no deadline, no prize, but it's something fun to do.

here's mine, hope it's ok to post this here?

http://www.filehosting.org/file/details ... ise1-1.mp3

it seems you have to give your email and they send you the download link. sorry it's so convoluted. if anyone has a better free file hosting service, lemme know!

i am VERY amateur, and spent about 3-4 hours total on this, maybe less, but i thought i'd give it a whirl. here's the breakdown, fwiw:

I'm using Cubase LE4 (came with my lexicon lambda) still learning the ropes! reaper i'm more familiar with.

drums:
addictive drums demo version. thank god i found it or i would NOT have been able to do thisat all! the only thing i did to them was pan the hat, and parallel process with heavy compression (thanks Joe G!)

Bass: some eq (i had trouble with that) and parallel processed some distortion. prolly overused it, but thanks again Joe G.

main git: rolloff lows , some light compression, and ran it thru a plugin called "tube baby" for some character. setting is called "crunchy 2" and i rolled off some highs using the plugin.

lead git. same as main git but aded some mids and a pingpong delay. tried to keep it pretty up front.

keys. used a VSTi called GTG micro organ Mk III. it's lovely, lots of presets and full control.

pad. steinberg's own Halion one, with 100k hpf, a vst called "breakdown" by tweakbench, and a mono to stereo plugin as icing.

i think that's it. oh yeah, i used a bit of the steinberg pantheon reverb on a track to which i sent primarily the guitars, and a very little bit of drums.

thanks for the great tracks, guys!

ps,any idea how long it'll take to get that song out of my head?!? ;)

We use dropbox to transfer large files.
https://www.dropbox.com/home

You start out with 2 GB for free and if you invite more people to join you get 5 gigs.

I usually listen to the show while at work, along with Net shows and forgot to get the mix files.
But here is my interpretation of the files. My first Soundclick upload also.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8878838

I use Sony Acid
Midi drums-Standard Drums
Keys-De-tuned Organ1
Pads-Ensemble Orchestra
Bass-4db boost below 250 Hz
Les.Paul.di-Vintage Amp Room - Brown Overdrive panned 25% right
Strat.di-Vintage Amp Room - Default panned 43% right
Strat.di duplicated and shifted 00.08 seconds-Vintage Amp Room - Brown Overdrive panned 43% left

Master Out-Ozone3-Rock Master 4 band with Excitation, Eq and Widening.

Doesn't sound too bad depending on the listening setup.
I enjoy the shows, it gives me inspiration to try things that I wouldn't have.

Great idea guys,
here's my effort

My goals:
1) Have fun
2) Spend minimum time, needed to get it done if possible while wife was out, other plans for the afternoon too.
3) Out of the box instruments and effects
4) Make it sound good (enough?)
5) Go for a vintage sound

Total Time: 20 mins, including loading the files.
Additional 10 minutes to burn a CD, check it on the stereo, rip it to Mp3 and check it on the iPod – close enough.
Total elapsed time, including upload, document it etc. < 60 mins.

If you’re interested, here’s what I did:

* Drums: EZdrummer Vintage, LiquidMix Distress Drum Bus
* Bass: LiquidMix Bass-Tube Vintage
* Strat: Amplitube Hendrix, Foxey Lady Intro. Liquid Mix EGtr-Heavy Tube
* Les Paul: Guitar Rig 4 Andy in A Bottle, LiquidMix EGtr-Lead Tube
* Keys: Pianoteq Rhodes, Cubase AmpSim California Combo (backed of the gain)
* Pad: NI B4 Woodstock
* Stereo Bus: TRackS3 Full Vintage Setup 1

I can identify with a doing a quick one.. My version was thrown together in about an hour.. Didn't have a lot of time available as I was and am very busy but wanted to support the team so took an hour out to knock it up.. I doubt I would have spent more than an hour so it is not as clean as I wanted but hell why not. Take it as it is was my comments to Ryan ha ha ha..

I did mine in Logic (ha ha ha can see Jesse's hair n his neck rising) and decided to do it all in the box and play with the Logic v9 amp and pedal tools.. Still learning them so I didn't do as well as I would wanted. Was going for a grungy sound not a pretty one for the bass and rhythm guitars. Also wanted a heavy drum sound.

For the keyboard and pad I used Omniphere - it has some cool sounds and built in effects etc. and also is quick and easy to add and play with. Chose a Rhodes keyboard and a strings pad.. I like using strings and things.. Always adds something to the mix I think.. just my opinion however.
For the drums I used EZDrummer.. mainly because it was a quick answer and EZDrummer is a good all rounder quick drum kit tool with a few nice kits to choose from.

Used a little compression here and there and a little EQ. also a small amount of automation to move panning and dynamics etc.

Didn't get around to doing any mastering processing.. Would have liked to but time was against me.

Anyway was great fun what little time I spent.

Steve
