New Companies Join MMA

Post by Jim_Fogle » Tue Nov 13, 2018 7:07 pm

MMA is the MIDI Manufacturers Association. I copied the text below from a the MMA newsletter. You can join the MMA for free or sign up for the newsletter at the association's website: https://www.midi.org/

The MIDI Manufacturers Association is in the planning stage of updating the MIDI specification. As word of the update spreads several companies are joining the association so they can participate in updating the standard.
The MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) announced that Ableton, Aodyo, Audio Modeling, Art and Logic, Melodics, Mind Music Labs, Native Instruments, OnSong, RnD64, and TouchKeys have joined the MMA to collaborate with other hardware and software developers on extending the power of MIDI technology. The planned update to the MIDI specification will support new levels of musical expression and make electronic instruments easier to configure and use.

Standardised in 1983, MIDI 1.0 has adapted over the years to support evolving operating systems and data transmission protocols.

This new initiative updates MIDI with auto-configuration, new DAW/Web integrations, extended resolution, increased expressiveness, and tighter timing -- all while maintaining a high priority on backward compatibility. This major update of MIDI will support the development of a new generation of interconnected devices, and preserve the relevance of existing MIDI 1.0 devices.

“Our goal is to assemble a diverse group of companies of different sizes and business models and help them come to consensus on how to make their products interoperable using MIDI technology,” explained Tom White, President of the MMA.

"auto-configuration"

That's all I needed to hear. :) For anyone who has tried to learn how to set up Midi connections for the first time, this would be a dream.

To me it's interesting that many of the things mentioned in the newsletter is more about implementing an existing standard than about new standard creation. I guess that's why a company that creates hardware and software like Native Instruments wants to have a voice to how the standard is implemented. As they say, the devil is in the details.

The standard that includes auto configuration is called MIDI Capability Inquiry or MIDI-CI for short. The MIDI CI standard was released during Winter NAMM last January, 2018. For those interested, the press release for the standard is available here: https://www.midi.org/articles/midi-man ... cification. The last sentence of the article includes a link to the new standard.

Another new standard released January, 2018 is MIDI Polyphonic Expression or simply MPE. Unlike MIDI-CI MPE seems to be better understood by equipment manufacturers as several have already implemented it into new hardware. Here is a link to the MPE webpage: https://www.midi.org/articles/midi-poly ... ession-mpe. Bunches of videos.
