More Pedal Steel Guitar Information (Links)

Post by Jim_Fogle » Fri Jan 04, 2019 2:48 pm

I'm continually searching for new information about the evolution of the pedal steel guitar.

A YouTube video features Dweezil Zappa interviewing pedal steel guitar player Paul Franklin about his rig and what makes a Franklin pedal steel revolutionary. Here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69-n32y ... l+Franklin.

Side note for those interested; this is one interview taken from an interview series where Dweezil Zappa interviews a noteworthy musician every month. This is a YouTube video series called Guitar Power sponsored by string and accessory manufacturer, D'Addario and Co.

Second side note for those interested, Peavey Amplifiers has been a strong supporter of the pedal steel guitar since the early seventies. They have a webpage with a wealth of pdf file links on their website. The link is here: https://peavey.com/support/steelguitaristinfo/

Fantastic Jim, thanks.

The Paul Franklin interview was amazing. I just cannot get my head around all the things you'd have to be in control of with those instruments and how much there is to remember.

I think I'm probably too old to start now (and I'm not sure I have the space for one!)

I've bookmarked the Peavey link for future reference.

Cheers

Dick

Glad you enjoyed the video Dick. I had you in mind when I posted the link.

Until I watched the video I didn't realize the Franklin instrument can change the pitch of a string plus or minus twelve tones or one octave. Conventional steels can change string pitch plus or minus two tones at most.

One pdf file stands above the rest at the Peavey website. Masters of the Pedal Steel is an interview with Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green and Paul Franklin. There are a lot of insights about the Nashville recording industry from the fifties to near current time. Here is a link to download the pdf file: https://assets.peavey.com/static/peavey ... lSteel.pdf

And I'll justadd that I read the Peavey stuff. Very interesting. Who'd have known there was almost a separate world in the pedal steel fraternity!
