Infant Eyes/Cover/REAPER/UX2/YouRockGuitar

Post by surfercook » Wed Oct 11, 2017 7:17 pm

Been a while since I hit REC. Took a while to get back on the horse. My dislocated ring finger on my left hand from Sept 2015 is WAY stronger now so my guitar playing strength is almost at 100%. It was a real struggle. Someone told me it would be around two years for it to come back and they were right, but it's still a little messed up. I can almost make a full fist now but not quite. The picture I've inserted is a Google image but it's the EXACT finger and joint that was dislocated by my board when I wiped out. It seriously looked exactly like that and freaked me out big time. I actually popped it back in as the next wave washed over me. Wasn't fun.
I hadn't booted up my desktop PC all summer which is for RECing, so it took a while to get on board w/updates. Took a good hour w/a few reboots but it finally took. I REC'd two ver of this beautiful ballad. I wasn't quite satisfied w/the first one so I did a second ver of this classic jazz ballad by composer Wayne Shorter. First is two electric guitars w/electric bass and MIDI drums for backup. Second is all MIDI w/tenor sax and electric piano w/an upright bass and wav drum loops for backup.
I love this tune. It has so much feel and soul in the melody and harmony. It's a bit "Out of the box" harmonically but that is Shorter's style.

Whooo Boy, that finger looks wicked!
I'm glad you're healing. Have we learned anything about the dangers of surfing yet, little fella? ;) I'm really not trying to sound like a "parent" here. If that's what fulfills you than that's your choice. Personally, the challenge to stay as healthy as possible everyday is exciting enough for me.

Love the tune and both versions of your cover. Wayne Shorter was a giant among jazz saxers and also was no slouch on composing either. What sax program are you using, or did you take up the horn yourself? ;)

Marc,
Good to hear you are on the mend! It looks like it would be hard to play with a finger like that. I don't know the original but this is an interesting piece. The more I hear jazz, the more I like it. It's well mixed and all the instruments sound fine. Good work! Glenn

Marc,

I listened to a couple of your tunes. I'm not into jazz that much but man you sure are a smooth playing musician. The instrumental, Midnight Jazz", is delightful.

Man, that photo is wicked bad. I'm surprised you can even hold a guitar.

Thanx Vocie, lung, and Fogle for chiming in for my new RECing. Quite pleased to hear the positive input. Nice to see the board is still active. To tell you the truth I wasn't even sure if it would still be available!

lol....surfing is ingrained in my soul, just like music. The two passions usually run neck and neck in the priority race. They both feed mind, body, and soul in equal proportions. Granted surfing is WAY more risky but the rewards are a bit different. Thanx for the concern, "Dad"! ;) It was def frustrating trying to play w/my injury. At times I felt I would never be able to achieve the ability I had b4 the injury. If your so inclined to view a video of my surfing from this past summer, here's the link. I left all the ocean sounds in w/out any music. It's exactly what you would see and hear if you were at the beach and in the water w/me.
The sax was played on my YRG using a tenor VSTi from the Kontakt library. NOT the factory selection. It's a way better one I grabbed a while back. I was surprised you thought it mighta actually been me playing a real sax. Those sax synths are not very good sounding. I musta auditioned ten different samples b4 going w/this one. btw- I actually did pick up a sax many yrs ago and was able to get a coupla scales off after about 10 mins.

That is music to my ears. I love to hear it when people are new to jazz and are diggin it. It's said to be one of the only true American art forms. If your wanting to hear THE definitive source for all things jazz try this link to WRTI outa Philadelphia. I started listening YEARS ago and now in this modern age of computers, smart phones, and tablets you can stream RTI from just about anywhere! As a matter of fact as I type this reply I'm listening right now! And they are spinning a cover of one of my favorite Ellington compositions titled "Chelsea Bridge". I love that tune cause it's SO Manhattan! It's a little tricky at first navigating the playlist(s) and sometimes it doesn't update in a timely manner but for the most part it's spot on. And the best thing is it's NPR(National Public Radio) so there are no commercials. It also provides quite extensive news programming. Be warned though, the fund raisers can be looong. I chipped $40 in this yr for good measure.

Hmmm...not sure which title you speak of. I have a couple w/the word "Midnight" in it. "Midnight Blue" and "Midnight Waltz" are the ones that come to mind. Regardless, I appreciate the kind words. Always nice to hear someone is enjoying my efforts. :D

A challenging piece Marc.

Certainly something to test that finger out (ouch that looks bad  )

The sax sound is a lot better than than many synth saxes I've heard.

Impressive.

Cheers

Dick

Midnight Waltz. I stand corrected. Still delightful to listen to, no matter the name.

Sounds good, Marc. I know nothing about Jazz or Jazz players, but I know a nice recording when I hear one and this fits the bill.

I know when a finger doesn't look right too and man, your finger sure doesn't look right. I'm glad it's healing.

The sax doesn't sound bad but I liked the first tune better. I like the guitar playing on it.
