Holy Ghost - original Logic X

Post by dickl » Mon Aug 13, 2018 8:21 am

Another inspired by Richard's Route 66 road trip.

Richard says : "Legend has it that Jack Kerouac typed On The Road on a continuous roll of paper - a stream of consciousness at 100 words per minute. He claimed it took him three weeks, but in reality he tinkered with it interminably. I read the Original Scroll and agree it needed a trim, particularly the endless skirt-chasing, boozing and police baiting nights in Denver, San Francisco and elsewhere.

I'm glad I made the effort though. Post-war America must have been one of the most wondrous places to have been in all of human history. Grab yourself a sweet little Mexican gal, snuggle up on the back of that bus and follow life down that white line"

Richard Marris: Lyrics, vocals, music, melody, guitars
Dick: guitars, keyboards, arrangement, production

Holy Ghost © Marris 2018

V1
Stream your consciousness on a paper roll
Everything you value most
Do not cut it keep it whole
It's been written by a holy ghost

Ch.
Did you follow Jack on the dirty highway
Make the bright lights on Broadway shine
Can you chase your lust most every day
Follow life down that white line …. That white line

V2
Will your children dream of ordinary lives?
Their parents lived too proud
Or did they imagine the honey hives?
The sweet confusion of the crowd.

Ch.

Br.
Write bold about the times you dared
Cross out the things that made you scared
Strengthened by the struggle, sharpened by the strife
Out there in this world, gonna cut it like a knife… like a knife

V3
Love and wine and neon signs
The notches on your post
Will it tell a story that still shines
When you go to meet your holy ghost?

Ch.

Great production. I love the electric guitar driving forward like it's a huge American made care from the 40's or 50's heading down the white line. All the other music fits in so nicely and swirls around. Outstanding. The lyrics are very good and that last verse is especially note worthy. I really like the holy ghost image. Good vocals too.

Great work you guys. I liked it.

Thanks Sean :) Much appreciated!

Richard's on a bit of a roll with his songs and we've still got one or two more to come.

Cheers

Nice work guys! I really like how the bass line accents the distorted guitar especially at end of some of the lines in the verses. It's a clear, well mixed recording. The acoustic break is a nice touch. Programmed drums?I enjoyed it! Glenn

Thanks Glenn.

None of it was planned. Richard played the guitar riff that ran all the way through then I added the bass and some other stuff and thought the bridge should sound different and it ended up acoustic!

Drum loops, so not possible to program them.

Thanks for the listen and comments :)

Cheers

Just got around to listening to the song. I like the beginning and the transposition from the recitation to the actual music. Top notch production values; well mixed, good balance and clear vocal. I would not have guessed the drum sequence is from loops.

The US prior to the introduction of the interstate highway system was so different than the way it is now I doubt if many can even imagine it. It was very much a time of discovery as it was the first time in US history lower and middle economic class families had the time, transport, financial means and desire to take vacations to far away lands.

Thanks for those comments Jim. Logic has an amazing set of instrumental loops. Some loops are "real" recordings (like the ones used here) and some are midi but they all sound pretty good.

Thanks also for your observations on the highways. Richard touched on that in his introduction about how exciting it must have been but I imagine you still needed the resources to do it!

Cheers

In the fifties and early sixties America was so in love with traveling to discover itself that "discover America" became the theme for several television shows and the main theme of Chevrolet advertisements. Chevrolet sponsored a one hour variety show, The Dinah Shore Show, where the star sang "See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet" during each live commercial. Dinah Shore was a big band vocalist that successfully transitioned into television. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinah_Shore

One television show, Route 66, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_66_(TV_series) was inspired by Jack Kerouac's book. The one question never asked in public but always on the mind of young viewers was "How in the world can two guys with no steady job afford afford a new Corvette each year? :!:

Another television show, Movin' On, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movin%27_On_(TV_series) was about two long distance, cross country truck drivers. Merle Haggard wrote and performed the theme song!

One last discover America show that's interesting is Along Came Bronson. It's interesting because it was on television for only one season but the show prominently featured music in each show. The lead actor, Michael Parks, released two albums with both albums featuring songs first performed on the show.

During the fifties and early sixties the US was fortunate to expend its energy maintaining its manufacturing edge and economic peak while Europe rebuilt from the ashes of World War Two, Japan was traumatized and rebuilding and Asia and Africa tried to recover from European domination. I'm not enough of a history buff to understand why the countries of South America were unable to capitalize on the war ending.

Thanks Jim. Once again your links prove fascinating reading :)

Dinah Shore I know as my dad used to have a couple of her albums and I think I've got them now.

I had a look for the Route 66 series but could only find this A tribute to Route 66 but I did find the first episode of Movin on Youtube is amazing!

Really interesting Jim, thanks :)

Cheers
