The Wagon : Original - Logic

Post by dickl » Mon Apr 22, 2019 3:41 am

A short song from my songwriting partner Richard.

Richard: Vocals, lyrics, melody, arrangement, acoustic guitar

Me: Electric guitar, bass and other instrumentation

The electric version of the track The Wagon - electric

The acoustic version of the track The Wagon - acoustic

The Wagon © Richard Marris 2019

The Sky looks lovely from down here
Darkening blue and crystal clear
Angry words from furious places
I look up and all I see are friendly faces

When my hand missed the rail I just faded away
Laid back on the road, called it a day
Knew what was coming, just didn’t care
Couldn’t picture your face, I just didn’t dare

But then a moment of clarity
Think of you, think of me
You waiting for me to come through
As I leave you with nothing in lieu

Think of the good days
The breaks in the rain
Then back to my old ways
Sharing the pain

And those cars they swerve around
These people put on my feet
Now can I stand on solid ground
And can I face what I can’t beat

Digging this. Like the horns or whatever ("moment of clarity"), invokes a sort of Southwestern US feel to me. Like a mariachi band or something. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Saw a film called the Highwaymen (about the pursuit of Bonnie and Clyde) and much of it takes place on the Texas plains during the depression, so maybe that's why it's on my mind.

Anyway, nicely done. Feel really suits the words.

Thanks Chris.

Oddly enough when Richard wrote it originally he had an idea of a bluegrass type banjo from the 20s or 30s but we couldn't get it it to sound right so your Southwestern comment is not too far from the intention.

Thanks for the comments about the feel. I think Richard got it right.

Highwaymen is on my Netflix list!

Cheers

Nice work Dick and Richard.

Although both recordings are well done the acoustic version appeals to me the most. Nice smooth sound. It does have a Southwest U. S. feel to it. Interesting lyrics. I had to really think about them before I got it. Good work to both of you.

Thanks Sean.

You've done well if you worked out the lyrics as I had to have them explained to me.

Like all good lyrics they can be interpreted in whatever way you want.

It's a true story about an alcoholic who was so drunk he fell off a bus. He thought he'd be run over but people helped him up and it turned a corner for him.

It wasn't me or Richard btw!

Thanks again for the listen and comments.

Cheers

Dick,
The tremolo effect on the rhythm guitar in the 'lectric version has an ethereal, spooky effect. I like it. This whole vibe reminds me of Wall of VooDoo. I like that version over the acoustic version. Both are good, but the electric seems richer. I like the lyrics too! Glenn

I like both versions. There is a pretty big difference in the apparent volume level of the electric versus the acoustic. The overall sound level of the electric is louder than the acoustic. The difference in sound level is most noticeable in the drum track in the beginning of each project

I found myself wondering how many vocal tracks were used. The background vocals are spread wide giving the feeling there are at least four background vocals. That's a lot of recording.

I like the acoustic guitar playing. The bass runs in the electric version are interesting, lots of action there. The electric guitar part matched the song well.

Interesting song. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jim.

Balancing electric and acoustic is always a bit tricky but I wanted the electric louder in the electric version.

There are in fact just two vocal tracks. A main one and the backing vocal. I used a vocal patch in Logic which uses something called Ensemble which, according to the blurb, uses 8 chorus effects (!) and spreads the vocal across the spectrum. I have no idea how it works but I like the effect!

This song is one of the simplest we've done recording wise. One acoustic track, one electric rhythm, one lead, one bass, one drums and one main vocal and one backing vocal with some added strings.

My next song post has about 12 guitar tracks......

Thanks for the listen and comments Jim.

Cheers

Good song. Overall I do like the electric version better, but it"s always good to here alternate versions of songs. I agree that the volume is considerably lower on the acoustic version. It was kind of hard to listen to on my phone.

Thanks Nick.

If I post two versions again I'll pay more attention to the levels.

Cheers
