12-8-80, direct into a mixer, original, pop

Post by Beatnick » Sun Jul 07, 2019 9:27 am

I always have a hard time labeling my music, some are easy, but I have no idea what genre to call this one. This was my little tribute to John Lennon, though the story is fictitious. I hate to admit it, but I really don't remember the day John Lennon was shot, but these were the words that came to me. It was written in the early 90s and everything was programmed on a Technics KN1000 keyboard. It was back when I was still pretty much recording live with one channel of a 2 channel mixer for the keyboard and another for vocals with an effect unit to add any needed effects to the vocals. The effect unit was probably a Zoom 505, but I'm not 100% sure. I've actually got quite a few recordings that were recorded live like that. I haven't decided if I want to release any more of them. I kind of want to move forward with new songs and maybe rerecording some of the better songs at this point, but a lot of my older recordings still sound pretty good to me, so it's hard to say what I will do. Before I put this on SoundCloud I did to a little remastering with Audacity. I already forgot what all I did, I know I did a little EQ adjustment and used noise reduction to get rid of some of the static, I may have added some compression too, but I'm not sure. I hope you enjoy it.

Very nice and simple. I can't argue with that. Nice melody too. Good (sad) story.

Nicely done. I like the sparse arrangement. I missed some of the lyrics though, so if you can post them at some point that would be useful.

Cheers

I was standing in a crowd one day
I turned and saw my friend
He had a rather sad looking face
As if the world had end
So I tried to approach him through the crowd
But I seemed to lose my way
Then I caught him again at lunch time
And this is what he said

He said, "Listen now
did you hear the news, my friend"
Well couldn't believe my ears that day
When he said, "John Lennon's dead."

I couldn't finish my lunch that day
Why did it have to end
I went home early and played all his records
Then cried myself to bed
Now Christmas didn't seem like much
To me just then
All I wanted to do was to be alone
With my best friend

We sat and talked a while
Just me and my friend
I was just as shocked the second time
When he said, "John Lennon's dead"

That's working off of memory, so it might not be 100% right. Since I did those early recordings live, the vocals often got buried in the mix. I definitely know how to play the guitar part on this one, I should revisit it.

Thanks for the comments.
