How do I get a sound like ZZ Top with a G5n????

Post by brfrokudan » Fri Feb 02, 2018 6:11 am

Hi,
I've been playing for a few years now with just an amp and no pedals. Bought Zoom G5n and mesmerized by the amount of choice.
Can anybody suggest a good patch setting for a ZZ Top style sound??
All suggestions appreciated.
Cheers
Bri

I'd suggest changing the subject of your post to:

"How do I get a ZZ top sound with G5n?"

I don't have a G5n, but have an MS-100BT which probably has similar models.

I did a little poking around & googling and see that ZZ Top's Gibbons used a Marshall Super Lead 100 for that signature sound. Sounds like that really is the key, straight tube distortion from the amp itself.

There was also mention of something called a Cooper Time Cube on the "Tush" track (which is a weird kind of mechanical delay involving a long rubber tube (?!).

Here's a link to the article with lots of info about those tones:

On your G5n, you might put a ZNR (noise reduction in the front, then the Marshall Super Lead model. If there isn't one, maybe try the Blues Breaker.
