Scary Bloody Desperate Deep : original Logic X

Post by dickl » Mon Jul 16, 2018 11:16 am

When Richard first came up with the idea for a “love” song we sat at the piano and with a guitar coming up with deliberately cliched and hack progressions.

I left it with Richard and he tightened up the melody and chords.

Richard says “Season 3 of Fargo starts with a ride in the snow to a backing track of Crazy on You by Heart. It's a 70s stadium rock masterpiece, but what really caught my ear was the absolute desperation in Ann Wilson's vocals.  It made me think about girl love songs v. boy love songs. Boys are generally singing about trying to get laid; girls are actually singing about love.  Shortly afterwards  a colleague told me about listening to Natalie Imbruglia's Torn during her 'hormonal teenage mess' years... If you're selling love songs, it seems to me, it's better to have some skin in the game”

Richard : Vocals, lyrics, guitar, bass
Dick : Arrangement, production
Ezkeys : piano (despite having this plug-in for years I've never used it before but we needed something different. Quite useful in the end)

Boys singing their seductive lies
Pony tails and pretty faces
Just superficial hormone highs
While girls they look for lipstick traces

When they find them, what do they do?
They tell you how betrayal feels
Sliced right open, torn in two
A wound that nothing heals

So if you’re selling love songs
Get some skin in the game
Build a pyre, stack up the wrongs
Hold your hand over the flame

Scary, bloody, desperate deep
Growing pains and losing sleep
Can’t live without him have to keep
Until… cut out the cancer, lose the creep

"...coming up with deliberately cliched and hack progressions."

I've made my career (if you can call this a career) out of deliberately clichéd and hack progressions. :hilarious:

Nice one, gents. I think it is a well written song with some good images, especially the chorus. I think the chorus is so good I would have liked to hear another round of it after the break, but this plays fine. The piano sounds good. I know John (V) uses it too. I might try it down the road. I liked the hint of guitar too.

Good song. Nice recording.

I really liked the counter beat that the base sometimes has. Nice melody and interesting lyrics. The mix is good except I kinda wish the drums were a little more prominent, especially in the solo. The vocal performance is right on. Nice work guys! Glenn

Good sounding song. If it was me I would have repeated the guitar part at the end using a slow fade out. Thanks for sharing I enjoyed listening to it.

Thanks chaps,

This is a a bit of a departure from our "normal" stuff and was a bit of an experiment so I'm pleased it's worked.

Sean: Thanks, I did wonder about a chorus repeat but for some reason, I can't remember why, I didn't do it! Perhaps I should try it. btw your stuff is hardly cliched :)

Glenn: Thanks for the listen and comments. The bass followed the bass drum for the first verse to give it a sparse feel but then started to move around when the other instruments were brought in. Not sure about the drums in the solo. I'll think about that one. Thanks again!

Jim: Thanks for that, we never thought about adding the guitar part at the end. If I get any time I might just add it to see how it works.

Cheers

Dick

Great observation on lyrics. Boys are generally about quickies and "booty calls" while girls are relationship oriented. Interesting how it translates into the song lyrics sometimes. Short but sweet.

Side note: Funny, but right before I listened to this, I was listening to Joni Mitchell's "Song For Sharon". A great tune where over the course of 10 verses she explains eloquently how she had always been dreaming of getting married from childhood on up while observing her friends and families love affairs. I always loved Joni. Still do. :D

Awesome song. Apparently, I'm a sucker for clichéd chord progressions, too. I also like short songs, overstaying a welcome can be awkward (at least that's what I fear). That middle part makes me think of some radio static or such in the background, to emphasize the plain dark beauty. Love how the voice kinda cracks singing the word "scary". Interesting lyrical perspective as well. I downloaded the song, thanks. I'm looking forward to communicating with you people. I was short introducing myself in this part of the forum, quite often I type myself empty at work. Oh well, Saturday's near.

Thanks guys.

John: yep, got it in one :) Thanks for the listen and comment. I never really listened to Joni Mitchell. Great lyricist but I never really got on with her voice.

Mc: Welcome once again! Not many of us left these days but I suppose you could say it's an exclusive club ;) Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I think Richard did an excellent job with the lyrics so he'll be pleased with them.

Cheers

Nice. Good piano work and keyboard strings. I love the guitar.
