Recording to FCP X with a Zoom H6

Post by oxband » Thu Jul 19, 2018 11:52 pm

I want to record some voiceover in FCP and I want to use my Zoom H6 as an interface to do it.

I cannot figure out how to do that. I've selected the audio interface option on the Zoom, but when I look at the input options in FCP, I don't see it.

Anyone here know how to do it?

Inevitable first question, assuming you are on Windows: have you downloaded and installed the dedicated ASIO driver from https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field- ... /downloads?

Presuming "FCP X" => Final Cut Pro X; it is Mac-only. There is no Mac ASIO driver.

If the OP is lucky -- the Mac may show /some/ USB audio device, but it likely will be stereo-only, using the main microphone module of the H6 (none of the auxiliary inputs).

You can see all the inputs. Just click on Advanced in the voiceover dialog.

This shows my interface in Final Cut Pro X. I'd plug in the H6 but all my USB ports are in use at this moment. You get the idea though.

I'd really consider recording into a DAW like Logic or Reaper, even GarageBand, and do your cleanup edits, compression, etc. there. Bounce and import into FCP, and just do splits and slides to align everything with the scenes there. But, then, I've never done a voiceover in FCP, so maybe it's Ok, if not the best tool for audio. (I do use it almost all the time for video.)

P.S.[Edit]
Ok, I noticed that backups weren't running so I grabbed that port and plugged in the H6, then [on the H6] selected Audio Interface mode and Multi-track on the next screen. It shows up right away in FCP-X without even a restart. Same picture, pretty much. Pick the inputs where you've got a mic or the XY capsule plugged in. (Don't use MS for this - that needs to go to a DAW for processing, or processing in the H6, I suppose.)

You guys are on the ball. My first question would have been, "What's FCP X". I hope your guesses are correct as your answers sure seem to answer the question.

It will be nice if Oxband updates this post.
