Let's Sail Away, original, PSRE403, SP1 mic, Cl1 inteface, Mixcraft 5

Post by The Cracks » Mon Nov 05, 2018 7:14 pm

The race is on between me salvaging all the left over stuff in my vault and my computer dying. I managed to get this one competed today. I recorded the piano part probably last spring along with the "away" part. I played with the song today and the lyrics just fell into place. The song is much better than the recording, in my opinion.

All music recorded using my PSRE403 into Mixcraft 5, via the Cl1 interface. The vocals are recorded into Mixcraft 5 via the SP1 mic. Everything mixed in
Mixcraft 5. I added some reverb and EQ to each track.

Edit note: I thought the original chorus was a bit clunky so I rewrote it a bit and recorded it again and recorded a second track for good measure. The new chorus is "Sail away with me dear...". I think it rolls of the tongue easier.

Here is: Let's Sail Away.

Thanks for any listens and comments.

I'm most impressed with the arrangement. The little things like the triangle, single note synth are well executed. The lyrics are great. It's difficult for me to believe you wrote and sang it today. That's impressive!

I still wish you would reduce the reverb. I get the feeling you don't trust how your vocal sounds but, think about it, I want more voice and less reverb. I hope you take that as a compliment.

The melancholic nature of the song belies the positive message.

Really well put together and produced.

Cheers

The piano and synth are great. Your vocals aren't perfect, but they work with the style of music you are playing. In some ways you remind me of Nick Cave.

Love it. The piano sounds great and the various accompaniments are subtle and worthwhile. Great simple song with conviction. Reminds me of Randy Newman and ... Joey Ramone!

Wow! Thanks for the listens and comments.

Thanks Jim. Except for the piano, I wrote and recorded all the parts, including the lyrics, yesterday. I appreciate your remarks. They really just came to me very clearly, except the chorus (see my note on writing a new one and recording it today). I do love the 'verb, I must admit. I've read John Lennon wouldn't record anything without the 'verb. I can't change it this time but I will try one without the 'verb one of these days. Thanks.

Thanks a million Dick. I actually had an even more depressed chorus before this one. But I used that chart you gave us all a few years back on what images each key invokes and this is in key of C so I tried to cheer it up a bit and that's when the whole sailing thing came into my head.

Thanks Beatnick! I appreciate your listen and comments. I like hearing anything about reminding anyone of Nick Cave!

Thanks aux8 for listen and comments on both of my songs. I do appreciate it. I was surprised how deep the piano sounded on this one, and pleased. Thanks for comparisons to those greats too.

Hey, it's starting to feel like the old days with so many participants.

I would love to see that chart. Sounds intetesting, but Dm better be the saddest of all keys.

Beatnick, the chart is called Christian Schubart's Ideen zu einer Aestetik der Tonkunst. It can be found on the Internet. The chart is very useful. I refer to it often when writing.

Yes, I got the reference, but really I think Fm is the darkest key, at least according to Schubart's chart. Dm is sad though.

Sean,
Nice work. Again the piano by itself with your voice creates a quiet drama and melancholy. That gives the lyrics the same tone, but in reading the lyrics could be interpeted a number of ways. Ambiguity is always a plus in my book! Nice recording. Everything works. Glenn

Thanks for the link on that chart. I bookmarked it. Truth be told I usually just go with what my gut tells me. Really, I've recently gave up on singing and decided to focus on instrumentals. Usually I play around with my guitar, keyboard or bass until I hear something I like. The riff or rhythm pattern I come up with usually ends up dictating the mood of the song.

Thank you Glenn for listen and comments. I appreciate it very much. I wrote the lyrics according to the mood "the chart" dictated (i.e., bright, upbeat, etc.) and the music was sadder. So it was a naturally occurring blunder. Thanks for saying it worked. :)

How is the hard drive holding up? Are you still able to salvage songs?

Jim, it's not doing too well. I can still salvage songs but the pc has so many fits, starts, and stalls that it is almost unbearable to use. I thought maybe if I switched from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome it might help but Chrome presents its own issues. I can still record on Mixcraft but it is beginning to have trouble searching for old songs. It also hiccups while recording but I'm so used to it that I just keep recording through and it doesn't show up on the final product. Once I'm done extracting my old songs from this pc, I'll get a new one. I have three more songs to record to reach my normal 10 song LP so I'll probably stop there. That means I'll probably let some five or so go unused and drift out to sea.
