G3n USB audio recording?

Post by Beatnick » Sat Mar 09, 2019 7:16 pm

Ok, so I know it's not something supported by Zoom. The G5n does have USB audio, but the G3n does not, but has anyone heard of any hacks or 3rd party drivers that would allow it? It would be a really nice addition. Or is that something that just can't be done if it's not in the hardware?

At the very least I think it would take a firmware hack. But quite possibly the hardware doesn't support USB audio since file transfer or even audio interface requires different circuitry than USB audio.

Yeah, I figured it would have to be in the hardware for it to work or a major hack. I doubt Zoom would do a firmware update that allowed for it, but custom firmwares have been done in the past. Honestly, the amp sounds on the G3 aren't as good as the G3n, but they are good so I might play with that again and try the USB recotding. The downside is recording keyboard. You can't do that through the USB.

You could easily put together a pretty nice audio & midi set up with small components that would be much easier and probably cheaper than trying to hack (and possibly ruin) your G3n.

Probably the cheapest is to look for a used audio interface (with MIDI if you need/want it). Depending on what kind of connectivity your computer has, you can choose firewire, or USB.

There's a cheapo Behringer audio i/o that gets decent reviews.

I did think about that. Maybe when I have a little extra money. Right now I tried using my G3 with the software that came with it (Sequel LE). Pain in the butt, everything sounded distorted through USB. Also the G3 was giving me way too much background noise. I played with a few settings and quickly gave up, not worth the effort. The R8 sounds good and is easy for me to use. I may try what you suggested later though.
