We're moving to Facebook

Post by Zoetrope » Sat Sep 28, 2019 4:10 pm

It's been a long time coming. You can find and join the new forum at https://www.facebook.com/groups/zoomforum/.

I'm going to close this forum to new members today or tomorrow and will be taking the whole thing offline probably by the end of the year. If there are posts you want to save, save them now. Heck, you can even post them over at the new forum.

It's been a blast, but it's time to move on. I hope to see you all on Facebook.

Sorry, but I do not do Facebook -- it has had way too much bad press and overhead for my tastes.

In truth, I'd have preferred it if even this had been an alt-group on Usenet.

Coincidentally, just deleted my Facebook account. Too many reasons to list.

Sad news for me. Like Wulfraed I'm not a Facebook member. However, the forum moving to Facebook is better than completely shutting the forum down.

Zoetrope, thank you for creating, moderating and sponsoring the forum all this time. As "they" say, all good things must end.

But ... based on the initial message stating this forum will soon be closed to new members, there is a fair chance you maybe the forum's final new member!

I'm sad to hear that Marc as I am really sorry to say I won't be following it.

I closed my FB account more than 2 years ago as I was sick of the idiots, arguments and abuse and have no intention of opening another.

It's been great knowing you guys and it looks like I have time for a another song post or two before it disappears.

If anyone wants my email address to stay in touch please DM me.

Cheers all and thanks Marc, you kept it going for much longer than I thought!

Best wishes

Dick

I hope some of you who aren't on Facebook will consider sneaking back on there, if only to join the new incarnation of the forum. Hell, join with a fake name. There are issues with Facebook for sure, but this move will save me hours of sorting through spammers and would-be hackers, plus the expense of running the forum. Believe me, I've been putting this off as long as I can. The forum has been running since Jun 4, 2001. Pulling the switch will not be easy.

Seems like goodbye, then... I don't do groups on facebook. I refuse to have to look at all kinds of unwanted content.
The signal to noise ratio of this forum is high. SNR of facebook is extremely low. My time is too valuable.

I appreciate your issues but I can't see me going back to FB. A number of years ago I tried once under another name and email address and FB told me I needed a telephone number and I don't have another phone.

Maybe if I ever get another phone number I'll think about it again.

I don't know how involved it would be, but I think it would help if you had a dedicated app. I don't think many people like browser based forums like this.

Also, I do not know if you do everything yourself, but maybe get some trusted moderators to help you with the workload.

And one last suggestion, have you considered MeWe? It really is a growing platform and you may have people more willing to go there than Facebook. Though I will admit there are a lot of pervy elements there. There probably is on Facebook too, I'm not that familiar with Facebook though.

I still haven't seen a single reason why this forum should end.

This is just my theory, but I think it's mostly because it is not the forum it was years ago. People have moved on, some away from Zoom, and as I mentioned not everyone likes browser based forums. I do remember right before I got my Zoom PS04 I came here for a bit and this place was really hopping back then. I still don't know why I didn't stay here back then.

Yes, times change, people change.

But a forum or user group stands or falls with a core of motivated people. Changing to a super-bloated big brother environment will not change that.
Most technical groups I've seen moving to facebook died quickly.

I had a look and unfortunately it's only available in the US.

There's something called "hangouts" but you need a US number that can forward calls and you need a google voice number to receive messages (which is what FB sends for security checking)

Buy a cheap prepaid sim and use it to register facebook (or better: signal, telegram, ...).

Well, I suppose you could use a VPN to register from the US but that might be more bother than it's worth.
